The Science of Linking Pheromones With Sexual Attraction

December 10th, 2011 No comments

A pheromone is a chemical that is either secreted or excreted by a member of a species in order to create a social or physical response within other members of that same species. These pheromones are used by many species as a method of remote communication. For example, there are pheromones that will trigger an attack response, a follow response, or even a sexual response. It is pheromones that identify food trails for insects and it is pheromones that an Africanized honey bee will leave on a victim as a signal of where the other bees should attack.

While entomologists may find all of this fascinating, for the rest of the world the interest in pheromones is on their impact between humans. While most advertisements involving pheromones focus on sexual attraction, it is not beyond reason to say that people are interested in pheromones for all of the ways in which they can be used to influence behaviors, feelings, and actions.

From the first studies on pheromones and mammals through modern day findings it was initially thought that pheromones work through the vomeronasal organ. The vomeronasal organ is a chemosensory organ that is found within the nasal septum, at its base. There is some debate about the interaction of the vomeronasal organ in adults, but its mere existence has formed the foundation for much of the human pheromone research. Other researchers have determined that they do not need an operable vomeronasal organ to verify findings that pheromones have an affect on humans. For these researchers, observing the affect is enough to justify their publishing study findings. Understanding how the affects are formed, that is to them, the subject for future studies.

Pheromones In Our Sweat

While much of the scientific community was debating whether pheromones could impact sexual behavior, Dr Winifred Cutler, a behavioral endocrinologist was able to isolate and identify the existence of pheromones in human sweat. She, along with a research team, were able to show that when underarm sweat was separated from the underarm, that pheromones remained.

This finding was important to Cutler because it validated her studies from years earlier that speculated about the affects of human pheromones but could not prove their existence. Her original study revolved around showing the effects of regular sexual activity and menstrual cycle regularity. Her study speculated that it was the pheromone interaction that contributes to this phenomenon and it was not until years late in 1986 when she was able to prove the existence of pheromones within humans.

These studies by Cutler mirrored other studies by a University of Chicago researcher, Martha McClintock. McClintock, like Cutler, made research finding that speculated on the affect of pheromones without being able to prove their existence. McClintock built on her previous research after Cutler using the proof of the existence of pheromones to validate the impact that pheromones had on ovulation. McClintock was able to show that menstrual cycles could be speed up or slowed down depending on the time within their overall cycle they were allowed to sniff pheromones. This led to the understanding of the impact of male sweat, the pheromones in that sweat, and its linkages to regular menstrual cycles.

This is all highly relevant to the effect of pheromones on sexual attraction because feelings of desire and the wanting of sexual activity is affected by the menstrual cycle which in itself is affected by pheromones. Science has made the link.

Secondary Pheromone Studies

Subsequent to the above referenced studies a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience in 2007 connected the smelling of androstadienone, a pheromone found in male sweat, a direct effect on producing and maintaining higher levels of cortisol in women. While increases cortisol levels are not directly associated with attraction of arousal, it does show the interrelationship between the male pheromone and the female response. This response has now been proven to have an impact on the endocrine balance of others, which can lead to enhanced or elevated mood.

This connection between the smell of a pheromone and the hormonal affects on the opposite sex has lead researchers to further validate the connections between pheromones and attraction, intimacy, and arousal. There has been additional research that has made preliminary connections between sexual attraction and the linkages between that attraction within same sex and opposite sex relationships. These finding are preliminary, but because the study was able to isolate variables as distinct as homo and heterosexual attraction the researchers were in fact able to isolate pheromones and prove their impact on attraction between all types of relationships, hetero and homosexual alike.

The Scents of Attraction

It has long been established that scents have an impact on mood and feelings. Sometimes these scents bring back anchored memories from our pasts locked in our subconscious and other times these scents bring about a new response that has not roots in our psyche but simply interacts with our brain in a particular way. Perfume and cologne manufacturers have known this for decades as have aromatherapists If you have ever had a particular scented perfume or cologne that absolutely draws you in or makes you have feelings of sexual desire, then you know the power a scent can have over your mind and body.

This is the same theory behind the science of pheromones. The sense of smell represents 20% of the ways in which we interact with the outside world. While some of us rely on our sense of vision, touch, and hearing; it is the sense of smell that circumvents our conscious mind and directly stimulates feelings within our subconscious. Consider food as an example. Were it not for your sense of smell, most food would taste the same. The smell is a major part of taste. This is how pheromones work. They are a natural by product of individuals and they trigger natural responses. Just as sensual touch and physical attraction can stimulate arousal and intimacy so can the sense of smell. Especially when those smells trigger a reaction that is within our deep down psychological and genetic memory, a scent of a pheromone that triggers a response that is beyond conscious analysis and yet it is a response that our primitive nature has kept with itself for thousands of years. It is this sort of primitive animal attraction that is deeply seated in our subconscious that is brought out with pheromones.

Pheromones and Attraction

Numerous researches have been conducted about the various aspects of pheromones. The working of these chemicals is always a subject of interest in almost all of these researches. Pheromones can be defined or described as powerful chemical signals that are produced in the body of human beings as well as other animals. There are varied reasons for the secretion of these chemicals by the body. In the case of human beings, the purpose of secreting the pheromones is for attracting the opposite sex. This is not always the case when it comes to the matter of the animal kingdom. There are two different and opposite functions for the secretion of pheromones. One is for attracting the mate and other is as a mechanism of defense. This may differ according to the situation. In both the case of human beings and animals, the pheromones have a close relation with attraction of the opposite sex.

The mechanism in the body tom differentiate the pheromones are so simple. There is a specific organ in the nose or the nasal cavity. It is called as Vemeronasal organ. This organ will sense the presence of pheromones and sends a signal to the brain. The pheromone from the skin mixes with the air in the surroundings. The individual who inhales the pheromones will get a signal according to the type of the pheromone that is released. These pheromones have the ability to make the person inhaling it to behave in a different way than normal. The change in the behavior will also depend on the type of pheromone.

The pheromones have a great role in making the human beings more socially adaptable. There are various reasons that have affected the natural ability of the human body to reduce or completely stop the ability of the body to produce pheromones. The living style, the food patters, and even the climatic changes could be those factors that have caused this problem. With the passing of time, people have become more aware of the positive effects of pheromones in their social and personal life. This is the factor that has made a huge amount of increase in the demand for the various products that has pheromones in it. Different people uses these products for different purposes. It could be in getting a date or for creating more exciting sex life with his or her partner.

It is a misconception that the use of pheromones will make them attractive for the opposite sex. There are some other factors that affect the feature of attraction. For example, a person who is not confident or has no sense of fashion and style will not get a positive result just because of the reason that he uses the pheromone products. Pheromones can only provide a much needed edge for the individual in making themselves feel attractive to the people he is interested in. the real effort has to come from the part of the individual to get the desired result. One should not expect the pheromones to do all the job in attracting people. This could be one factor that creates a negative about the pheromone products that it is not working.

Can Pheromones Help You Attract Women

Pheromones are those chemicals that we cannot see , that we are not conscious of their presence, but it intensely stimulates our body especially in terms of attraction.

These substances are secreted by the body for “mating” purpose , so the female attracts the male of the same species by releasing the right pheromones.

The same thing happens with males in order to attract females. This can happen to any living creature – people, animals and insects – because all living beings need a partner to reproduce and the way to attract the partner is through the release of pheromones. In the humans case the idea that our bodies are attracting chemically is a bit strange and simultaneously it is not.

There are many ways in which a person can produce pheromones, and many reasons for this to, but before you do this you need to know more about them.

One of the main reasons why you want to release the pheromones is that you can use them to achieve certain goals. For example, if you were able to produce your own pheromones, then you “perfume” with them anytime and the opposite sex would be instantly attracted to the odor.

The effects of pheromones on the opposite sex :

  • Sexual attraction
  • Trust
  • Relaxation
  • Pheromones increase the sexual desire to the opposite sex
  • Pheromones contribute in improving your sex life by increasing your sexual acts.
  • Because pheromones increase attractiveness and charm (the aura) of the person there will also be a growing self-confidence, a better personal image perception.

How perfumes with pheromones affect us?

We all like different fragrant flavors that we associate with different things, for example, very often associated with relaxation is the lavender. Many of us use perfumes in different ways to improve the smell of a room, the clothes and body. Perfume is extracted from plants and flowers and it trigger different senses in order to induce certain states. Plants contain pheromones, which converts into perfumes and from them, they provide to our senses the desired reaction.

The perfumes with pheromones are extremely beneficial for people who do not give off enough pheromones naturally and experience a failure because of that. They are also extremely practical because you just have to replace your regular perfume with the scent of pheromones, which may have different smells. Pheromones have no smell so it can be easily integrated into a perfume with different scents.

Everyone likes to be admired and attractive, so even if you are married, became engaged or engaged in a long term relationship you can get out on the street equipped with this secret weapon, and all thr persons of the opposite sex will admire you , respect you and maybe love you.

Pheromones Responsible for the Attraction?

December 10th, 2010 1 comment

Pheromones are those chemical substances that are released by the body of living beings to attract the individuals of their own species. The amount of pheromone released varies from individual to individual. There are types of pheromones which can be released and this depends on the organism which is releasing the pheromones. Many insects and some of the plants and animals have also found to be releasing pheromones. The release of pheromones is also believed to take place in humans. Many times scientists face a big question whether really animal body releases some sort of sexually stimulating chemicals. There have been various documentaries that have been made to show the process of pheromones and their release in insects. These sow how a group of males converge towards a sex pheromone released by the female insect.

Even in dogs it is seen that when a female dog is under the period of heat, the male dog automatically receives some indication and it starts getting excited and stressed. Many wild animals also leave behind their trail and it is not necessary that these are released for sexual purposes only. It is also seen some times in humans that certain compounds present in the sweat stimulate the opposite sex. These examples make one believe that no doubt pheromones do work. But all does not look good when one looks at the other side of the story.

There has not been sufficient proof to tell whether the pheromones are indeed responsible for the work that is attributed to them. Defining a proper cause and effect relationship has not been possible. Indeed the scientists have put forward various explanations especially in case of human beings to show how pheromones have affect on the behavior pattern of the individual but there has not been any proof put forward thus far which could be considered concrete. There are a lot of if and but in the various theories put forward.

A number of tests have been also done and there are number of sites which assure about their working but their credibility is not fully trustworthy. It can be possible that it is not pheromone but some other activity simultaneously associated with release of pheromones that is affecting the behavior. If the pheromones affect is questioned definitely the claims of pheromone perfume makers can be questioned. Therefore one can not fully guarantee that these should also work.

Whether pheromones work or not will remain a topic of discussion and we should wait until further work by science in the field to know the result.
