Pheromones are used by almost every species on Earth. They act to convey messages in a similar way as an email or a conversation but many times they have more impact or forcefulness behind them while at the same time appearing completely unknown to the person who gets the message. Pheromones are used to convey a huge number of messages from animals marking their territory or warning of danger right up to human pheromones being used for sexual attraction. Pheromones are very diverse though normally they are recognized as one of three distinct types.

  1. The first type are what is known as primer pheromones, there main mode of action is to alter the hormonal chemistry in the receiver or receivers of the pheromones. In nature this is could be letting other animals know it is mating season and they are fertile.
  2. The secondary type are called releaser pheromones. These pheromones cause a certain type of behavior in the receiver. This could be something like being wary because danger is about or to become attracted to someone else.
  3. The third type are called information pheromones, these carry information to the receiver and let them know of things such as the health of the originator or the emotional state.

There have been many exciting studies done on human pheromones with great results. Pheromones such as androstenone have been largely studied and shown to be highly affective at influencing others, they have shown to be particularly effective at making women more sexually attracted to the user. Some people refute the claims that pheromones have any bearing on sexual attraction but the huge number of people who use pheromones (myself included) claim they have marvelous results. Pheromone attraction is largely a subjective discipline and not one in which a controlled scientific study can be performed with absolute merit. Therefore we really only have the word of people who use these pheromones to go on.
